Women in Film Portland is a membership organization that is managed solely by a strong working board – a group of media professionals who have participated in WIF and who care deeply about its ability to thrive and continue to successfully support women in all fields of the media industry throughout Oregon. Below is some basic information about the WIF board of directors:
– This year we are looking to fill 6 open slots on the board.
– Board members now serve 3-year terms, which will begin on January, 2016.
– Board meetings are held every other month and you must attend the meetings (if you have to miss some we can work with you on that, but we really need attendance at the board meetings to be a priority). There is also one full day required organizational retreat per year; this usually occurs in January. *Board member positions are voluntary and unpaid
– We are a working board and all board members are expected to participate in managing programs and fundraising events and to keep WIF operating with efficiency and integrity. Every board member is expected to take the lead on at least one organizational activity or task.
– To run for the board you must be a member of WIF Portland and your membership dues must be up to date.
This year we are also specifically looking for people with accounting skills.
If you have either of these skill sets, please reach out to us and consider running for the board.
Testimonial from Women in Film Portland Vice President Kate McMahon:
In 2009 I attended the initial planning meeting to create the Women in Film-Portland chapter. I was a new mother with an infant at home, and one of my biggest fears was that I would lose touch with the producing career I had worked so hard to build for over a decade. At that time, I was unable to do more than join the newly forged WIF-PDX chapter as a member and attend a few events. It was a way for me to keep in touch with Portland’s filmmaker community as often as I could, and it allowed me to network with other women in film who understood the challenges of balancing life with documentary filmmaking. Five years and another baby later, I decided to bump up my level of my participation in WIF and go for a board position. Since my election to the board of directors 18 months ago, I have found that the role opens up new leadership opportunities for me. For example, I brought the Documentary Summit to Portland in 2014 and organized the 2014 WIF-PDX holiday party, which I’ll do again this year. These were two of WIF-PDX’s most-attended events, and had major impact. This year, I’m scaling back slightly – mainly focusing on the holiday party and keeping up with general WIF responsibilities. That’s the beauty of being a WIF board member: You get what you give, and there is no pressure to do more than you can. I strongly encourage anyone interested in leveling up to a leadership role in Portland’s film industry to apply for a WIF-PDX board member position.
If you would like to run for the board please submit the following materials by September 30, 2015 (please email all materials to: whatsupwif@wifpdx.org
In 250 words or less, please explain why you’d like to join the board (you may include in this what your experience is with WIF, what knowledge, skills, or passions you would like to contribute to WIF, what programs or events you’d like to work on, etc.).
In 250 words or less, please tell us about yourself and your work (this is just a short bio).
A digital photograph of yourself in a JPG format (this can be a professional headshot or casual snapshot – we just want to see your face ☺).
This is a great opportunity for all members and if you care about WIF you’d probably make a great board member!
